(Sector Diagnostic and Policy Recommendations)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

On Tuesday October 12, 2004 the Cabinet Meeting of the Government of Belize endorsed the formulation of a National Energy Plan for Belize and mandated the Public Utilities Commission to spearhead the initiative. The Cabinet reached this decision after studying the Energy Policy Recommendations created by the 2003 project described below.

THE PROJECT

In 2003 the Public Utilities Commission implemented a one year project entitled Formulation of a National Energy Plan for Belize (Sector Diagnostic and Policy Recommendations).

The project analysed the energy sector and made policy recommendations to promote affordable, efficient and accessible forms of sustainable energy. It was funded by the United National Development Fund (UNDP) in conjunction with the Government of Belize and the Public Utilities Commission.

In order to develop in a sustainable manner, it is critical that Belize promotes sustainable energy technologies and practices. Sustainable energy is environmentally sound, safe, reliable, affordable energy - which supports sustainable development in all its economic, environmental, social and security dimensions.

The project was advised by a multi-sectoral committee of energy stakeholders from government, industry, academia, and civil society. Members have agreed to continue to meet in order to advise future energy initiatives.

The primary policy recommendation of the project is that Belize develops a comprehensive National Energy Policy, with accompanying Implementation Plan. The project team are now seeking significant funding to make this possible.
